Notebook, 1845.

This notebook contains copies of petitions and letters of recommendation for the reinstatement of French, written to President James Knox Polk (1795-1849) and Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft (1800-1891). These recommendations occasionally state French's political convictions. There are also a few letters of introductions written for French for a business trip to Washington, D.C. Enclosed in the notebook is a newspaper article mentioning French.

George Bancroft was an American historian and statesman, and an active promoter of secondary education both in his home state and at the national level. As U. S. Secretary of the Navy under James K.
